Eating too much salt is not good for
health and can lead to raised blood pressure, which triples your chances of
developing heart disease and stroke. The recommended amount of salt is 6 grams
per day.
Irish men consume 10g of salt a day and women consume 7g.Children need
only 3-5g a day so try not to give them a taste for salty foods. About 80% of
the salt that you eat is hidden in everyday foods. These include processed
meats, bacon, sausages, puddings, ready-made meals and sauces. Packet soups,
stock cubes, gravy granules and some breakfast cereals and breads are also high
in salt, as are salty snacks from the Top Shelf of the Food Pyramid. Eat less
of these high salt foods and remember to check the label
