Facts about salt

Eating too much salt is not good for health and can lead to raised blood pressure, which triples your chances of developing heart disease and stroke. The recommended amount of salt is 6 grams per day.
Irish men consume 10g of salt a day and women consume 7g.Children need only 3-5g a day so try not to give them a taste for salty foods. About 80% of the salt that you eat is hidden in everyday foods. These include processed meats, bacon, sausages, puddings, ready-made meals and sauces. Packet soups, stock cubes, gravy granules and some breakfast cereals and breads are also high in salt, as are salty snacks from the Top Shelf of the Food Pyramid.
